Kick It Out slam Mackay’s appointment as Wigan boss

first_img1 New Wigan manager Malky Mackay Wigan have been accused of disregarding the Football Association’s ongoing investigation into Malky Mackay by appointing the Scot as their new manager. The Championship club have announced the former Cardiff boss will succeed Uwe Rosler at the helm despite Mackay being still investigated by the FA for last season’s text message scandal. The 42-year-old was forced to pull out of the running to become Crystal Palace manager in August over claims he sent text messages of a homophobic, racist and sexist nature to former colleague Iain Moody during his time in Wales. And football’s anti-discrimination body Kick It Out has questioned his appointment.A Kick It Out statement said: “The FA began investigating in August alleged racist, anti-Semitic, sexist and homophobic comments made by Malky Mackay and Iain Moody, and we are still yet to hear whether this is near to reaching its conclusion almost three months on.Where does the case now lie and how close are we to seeing whether the FA will take the appropriate action?“Wigan Athletic have disregarded the ongoing investigation being undertaken by the FA, and any potential punishment Mackay may face, by taking the decision to appoint him.“We need to see leadership, and a respect for the processes in place, shown by football club owners to demonstrate how seriously they take tackling issues of exclusion, prejudice and discrimination.”Kick It Out also called on the FA to clarify whether it is happy with Wigan’s action. It added: “It remains to be seen if Wigan’s position is one which the FA and all of football’s so-called ‘family’ are happy with.“The FA now needs to move swiftly to let everybody know whether they agree with Wigan’s position or whether they will reinforce their own zero-tolerance stance on all such matters of equality and diversity.“It is essential high levels of conduct are maintained by those in positions of power such as club owners, boardroom officials, chief executives, managers, coaches and players, and we expect The FA, the Premier League, the Football League, the Professional Footballers’ Association and the League Managers Association to ensure these standards are upheld at all times.”last_img read more

Bioneers Update: International Conference Held on Animal-Inspired Design

first_imgGeorgia Tech came out with a press release about progress at their Center for Biologically Inspired Design (CBID) that opened last year (see 10/29/2005).  At a two-day conference May 11-12, international representatives from 20 institutions shared their inspirations on how nature can “help them solve some of the most complex problems of the day,” just as it has inspired poets, artists and musicians.    Though evolution by natural selection is often assumed as the mechanism by which animals solved their design problems, the main thing evolving at CBID is “the belief that every animal must solve a particular problem to survive, so every animal embodies a design solution for a particular problem.”  The assumption that scientists are mining “millions of years of knowledge embedded in the DNA of each creature” does not appear to be essential for the scientists’ own work, which is really reverse engineering the design that is observed in current-day living creatures. While scientists, like Leonardo DaVinci, looked to nature for inspiration centuries ago, biomimetics has recently caught on as a hot area of research at universities across the country.  Last year, Georgia Tech launched the Center for Biologically Inspired Design (CBID) as a way to encourage more of the interdisciplinary research that was already taking place among research groups.  Now, the center boasts 20 members comprised of researchers from various fields of engineering, biology, chemistry, psychology, applied physiology and architecture. The press release mentions that UC Berkeley, U of Illinois, Caltech, and Case Western will be sharing results of their research.  In addition, international scientists from U of Toronto (Canada), Max Planck Institute (Germany) and Shandong University (China) are sharing their work in progress.  Here are examples coming out of this new kind of research:Worm brains:  How tiny worms express genes might yield brain-inspired sensors.Cat balance:  Learning from cats and frogs (yes, frogs) and the way their muscles produce balance might yield better prosthetic devices for the handicapped.Fish teeth:  Fish jaws can help us better understand the mechanical properties of jaws and teeth under stress.Spider silk:  Spider web studies are improving elasticity of artificial materials.Butterfly wing structure:  The arrangement of butterfly scales looks promising for structural patterning.Gecko glue:  The dry adhesive properties of gecko hairs are inspiring new artificial adhesives.Diatom strength:  Patterns and processes in the construction of diatom shells help nanotechnologists build reinforced, shatterproof glass and porcelain. And that’s just for starters.  “Other researchers will present research on the propulsive systems used in fish fins, jellyfish jets, insect legs and snake undulations, along with various ways to produce and coordinate these motions,” the press release ends.  The biosphere’s the limit.Q: How did the Animal Plan It?  A: Not by watching the DIY (Do-It-Yourself) Channel, but through the Discovery Channel of its own built-in Design Network.    The evolution talk in these biomimetics stories (when it occurs at all) is, as Phillip Skell phrases it, “brought in, after the breakthroughs, as an interesting narrative gloss” (02/28/2006).  What is really inspiring this explosion in productive research?  It’s the D word: biological design.  Once the researchers realize that the Charlie mumbo jumbo is only a bad habit, a traditional password in scientific circles that has lost its authority, a holy undergarment that only itches and gets in the way, productivity will be liberated in this exciting field.  Pretty soon the handicapped may be leaping over tall buildings like Superman and you may be scaling buildings like Spiderman.  Go, Bioneers!(Visited 8 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

MacOS Catalina These 3 new features are the best

Overall, there’s some new mojo in the Mac universe right now after the launch of the new Mac Pro, which is basically a supercomputer for your desk, and the Apple Pro Display XDR, which is pushing forward the technology for desktop displays in ways most of us didn’t expect.Of course, all that massively powerful hardware needs software to take advantage of it and that’s where Catalina comes in. At Apple’s annual WWDC conference, where Catalina announced, Apple’s Tim Cook said the new Mac experience was “Inspired by pro users but designed for everyone.” So let’s talk about the Top 3 features that will make the upgrade worth looking forward to for most users.1. SidecarBy far, the biggest and most useful feature in Catalina is the ability to connect an iPad as a second display for your Mac using a new feature called Sidecar. Apps like Duet Display and Luna Display have been doing this for years, but Apple has made it fast, easy and seamless. And it’s added Apple Pencil support, which means creatives can now use their iPad as a drawing tablet for the Mac. There are a ton of other uses for Sidecar, from using it to view documents while you’re writing a message to viewing videos on the side to just having more windows open when you’re multitasking. Even if you’ve never been a multiple monitor person, you’ll probably find a lot to like about this feature and it’s way to give your iPad a lot more use.apple-macos-catalina-sidecar-tethered-woman-drawing-06032019-big-jpg-medium-2xSidecar lets you use your iPad as a second monitor for your Mac and as a drawing tablet. Apple 2. iOS apps on the MacThere’s been plenty buzz, as well as some confusion around Apple bringing iOS apps to the Mac. Last year’s first four apps (Apple News, Stocks, Home, and Voice Memos) were disappointing. But, the new generation of iOS apps on Mac — including Twitter, TripIt, Rosetta Stone, DC Universe, Jira Cloud and Gameloft’s Asphalt 9 racing game look a lot more promising. You won’t see these until the final version of Catalina comes out in the fall, but the early previews look like they’re going to add a lot more interesting, helpful and fun stuff to the Mac experience.iOS apps on the Mac Apple 3. The replacement of iTunesIt’s no secret that iTunes has been called out in recent years as a bloated and cumbersome way to manage music, movies and other media. So in Catalina, Apple has finally delivered its successor in the form of three new apps: Music, Podcasts and Apple TV. All in all, this is a much cleaner and simpler way to access your entertainment, and it automatically syncs with your other Apple devices. So your progress on a podcast or a movie, for example, is carried over from your iPhone or your Apple TV to your Mac. It also automatically imports your whole iTunes library (even old CDs you burned). And when you plug in your iPhone or iPad to your Mac, your backups and updates can now be handled through the Finder rather than the iTunes app.apple-music-podcast-tv-catalinaCatalina has split iTunes into the Apple Music, Podcasts and Apple TV apps. CNET Other noteworthy featuresOther interesting Catalina upgrades worth noting include:Voice Control has been greatly expanded as an accessibility featureThe new Find My app for locating a lost Mac even if it’s offlineA redesign for the Reminders appShared folders and a new gallery view in NotesScreen Time is now on the MacSafari now lets you screenshot a whole web page and export it as a PDFOne thing Apple still needs to fixThe biggest disappointment in the Catalina beta is that Apple News still hasn’t gotten enough of an overhaul to make it as good as it is on iOS, let alone take advantage of extra capabilities on the Mac. With the launch of Apple News Plus, this makes a Mac overhaul for the News app even more urgent.Final wordCatalina takes the Mac forward in ways that a lot of Mac users will appreciate, especially when using your Mac for entertainment and for the new bridges it builds between Macs and iPads and iPhones. Again, just remember not to install the public beta on the production machine you use to get work done everyday. Wait for the final version this fall before you do that. Idea Vodafone one step closer to merge into Indias largest telecom firm

first_imgA rickshaw puller speaks on his mobile phone as he waits for customers in front of advertisement billboards belonging to telecom companies in Kolkata February 3, 2014.REUTERS/Rupak De ChowdhuriThe proposed merger between Idea Cellular and Vodafone India has got approval from the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).After the merger of two telecom companies, Idea and Vodafone will jointly have over 400 million mobile subscribers and together account for the largest share of the Indian telecom segment, reports PTI quoting latest data published by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).Vodafone and Idea are the second and third-largest players, respectively, in the Indian telecom industry now. After the merger, the joint entity will become the number one player in the Indian telecom market in terms of customer base. Currently, Bharti Airtel tops the list.Vodafone India is expected to hold around 47.5 percent share in the new entity, while the rest will be owned by Idea Cellular and promoter Aditya Birla Group (AB Group). Earlier, the AB Group had planned to raise up to Rs 6,750 crore ahead of its merger with Vodafone. The proposed merger of Vodafone India and Idea will create an entity with revenue of around Rs 775-800 billion. The consolidation of Idea and Vodafone will leave only three or four big companies in the telecom industry, which will result in less competition and bigger revenues. The merger deal is expected to be completed by the middle of 2018. The two telecom companies now await the final approval for the merger from the Department of Telecom after Vodafone’s appeal also gets NCLT approval.”We wish to inform you that the Hon’ble National Company Law Tribunal, bench at Ahmedabad, vide its order dated January 11, 2018, has sanctioned the composite scheme of amalgamation and arrangement among Vodafone Mobile Services Limited and Vodafone India Limited and Idea Cellular Limited,” Idea Cellular was quoted by PTI as saying.last_img read more
