Ravi Shastri would never have made it under current BCCI coaching eligibility norms

first_imgThere has been a lot of curiosity around the eligibility criteria laid down by BCCI for the Indian head coach position as opposed to the last time the post was advertised.Interestingly, current coach Ravi Shastri, who remains a strong contender to get the job again, would never have qualified if the ‘prior coaching experience’ norms were adhered to when he was named Team Director in 2014.The new coaching advertisement seeks applicants who have been ‘head coach of a full member Test playing nation for a minimum period of two years or head coach of an associate member/IPL or equivalent international leagues/first class teams/national A teams for a minimum three years’.Shastri, who played for India from 1982 till 1992, had been working as a cricket broadcaster after his retirement and had no prior coaching experience at the time, except a series in Bangladesh in 2007 with the Indian team. The then-BCCI dispensation during the N Srinivasan era drafted Ravi Shastri in as team director mid-way through the tour of England in August 2014 even when Duncan Fletcher was the coach and World Cup 2015 was around the corner.Ravi Shastri remained team director till June 2016 until India lost in the World T20 semi-finals before being reappointed as head coach in 2017 after Anil Kumble was removed following his differences with captain Virat Kohli. The Shastri-Kohli combine has helped India climb the top of the Test rankings with a historic series triumph in Australia. However, under Shastri, India have failed to get past the semi-finals at World Cup 2015, World T20 2016 and World Cup 2019. Shastri is also an automatic contender for the head coach post advertised for a two-year term.advertisementAlso Read | Virat Kohli set to travel to West Indies for T20Is, ODIs and TestsAlso Read | Kapil Dev-led CAC favourites to pick Indian team coachAlso Read | BCCI’s new Cricket Advisory Committee to pick Team India head coachlast_img
