Chimei Innolux develops 5inch 1080p 443ppi display

first_imgThere’s a growing trend of using larger displays in new smartphones, and even Apple isn’t immune with its predicted move to a 4-inch display for the iPhone 5. Chimei Innolux, the largest company making LCDs in Taiwan, wants phone manufacturers to go even bigger though, and is tempting them with a new 5-inch display.5 inches may seem a little large for your pocket, but Chimei is offering up an LCD you may want to buy new jeans with bigger pockets for. That’s because the resolution on this screen is 1080p (1920 x 1080), translating to an ultra-crisp 443ppi. As a comparison, the current iPhone 4S %displayPrice% at %seller% Retina Display is 326ppi.Chimei looks to be coming to the rescue of non-iPad tablets, too. A larger 9.7-inch display is also going to be made available with a resolution as high as 2560 x 1920. The new iPad’s Retina Display is 2048 x 1536 and 264ppi. Chimei’s pushes that up to 330ppi and will have app developers scrambling to update their visuals if it makes it into some Android tablets. If you like your smartphone a bit smaller, Chimei has a couple of new OLED displays to cater to your needs. There’s a 3.4-inch and 4.3-inch version of their TRUEOLED displays being put into production that still achieve a very respectable Retina-matching 326ppi. And being OLED they are going to be very power efficient. All of Chimei’s new screens are expected to be on display during Touch Taiwan, which starts today and runs through Friday. Hopefully it won’t be too long after that we hear announcements about new 5-inch smartphones and 9.7-inch tablets offering these very high resolutions.More at Chimei Innolux, via The Vergelast_img read more
