LMA Takes Over Ganta General Market

first_imgThe Liberia Marketing Association has taken over the Ganta General Market as one of its branches in Nimba. The turning over ceremony, which was held at the Concern Women Center in Ganta, brought together a cross section of the elders of Ganta who had been in charge of the running of the market.“Before the war, the Ganta Market was part of the Liberia Marketing Association, but after the war the market had been run by the community until today’s turning over,” said LMA President, Lusu K. Sloan. She expressed happiness over the turning over of the market to the authority of the LMA as they have long been negotiating to get the market.“The Liberia Marketing Association is going to work closely with this market so as to develop it from the intake that will be generated from the market,” she added.“Despite being turned over, the Ganta Market still remains as an associate member until everything in the possession is turned over,” said the Board Chairperson Beatrice Dennis. The Ganta Market is still running under the makeshift shelter occupying a disputed land, which was declared eminent domain by President Sirleaf during the 2010 Independence Day celebration in Nimba. The new building, which is under construction by the Sirleaf Market Women’s Fund, is yet to be completed since three years after the project started.City Mayor Ben Dokpa praised the turning over ceremony as another beginning to bring development in Ganta. He thanked the elders and the leader of the Ganta Market for agreeing to be part of the mother organization, the Liberia Marketing Association, and urged them to work together to bring change in the market. Mayor Dokpa told the LMA head that the construction of the Ganta General Market under the stewardship of the Sirleaf Market Women’s Fund remains at a standstill because the engineer practically disappeared. “We have several bags of cement and other materials down, but the where about of the engineer remain unknown,” he concluded.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
