Liberia: Call for investigation after threat from presidential spokesman

first_img LiberiaAfrica Condemning abuses Judicial harassmentFreedom of expression Press Union of Liberia vice-president Jallah E. Grayfield has asked the police to investigate the threats he received from presidential press secretary Jerolinmek Piah after taking part in debate with information minister Isaac Jackson on Radio Prime 105.5 FM on 6 September. During the programme, Grayfield criticized the government’s recent closure of the two privately-owned radio stations as “undemocratic” and called for them to be reopened. As he was leaving Radio Prime, Grayfield received several SMS messages from Piah accusing him of being a “disgrace” to his organization and warning that “you will feel what you have started.” Grayfield said he asked the police to investigate because he was concerned by what he regarded as a new government attack on the media. “It is unacceptable that those who represent and defend the media are unable to freely express their opinion and are the target of threats,” RSF said. “We call on the Liberian president’s office to put a stop to this kind of behaviour, which discredits the entire administration.” RSF added: “At a time when Liberia’s voters are preparing to make political choices next year, they have a right to hear all opinions, even those that are critical and irritate the current government.” The radio stations that upset the president’s office are Voice FM and LIB 24. Voice FM is owned by well-known commentator Henry Costa, who produces his show from the United States, where he lives. LIB 24 is owned by a politician, would-be presidential candidate Benoni Urey, who also owns a TV channel, LIB 24 TV. The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), which is responsible for assigning broadcast frequencies, closed Voice FM and seized its equipment on 4 July after obtaining the justice ministry’s authorization to move against it on the grounds that it was using its frequency illegally. Voice FM’s management say that all their attempts to sort out the station’s legal situation were rejected by the authorities, who were looking for a pretext to close it down. It remains closed.LIB 24 was shut down on 13 August after a week of broadcasting the Henry Costa Show, which is very critical of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Police and intelligence officials confiscated its broadcast equipment and sealed its premises on the official grounds of non-payment of tax arrears. The head of the LTA, Henry Benson, said at a press conference: “The LTA was established by law to regulate and will continue to do so. We have effectively shut down a radio station, beginning with Voice FM 102.7 and more to come, because we have to show that there is law and order in Liberia.” Liberia is ranked 93rd out of 180 countries in RSF’s 2016 World Press Freedom Index. Raptors offseason preview: Toronto makes its final case to Kawhi Leonard

first_imgTeam president Masai Ujiri, coach Nick Nurse, Raptors players, the training staff — each piece allowed Leonard to thrive. He particularly appreciated the team’s load management strategy, which kept Leonard fresh for the postseason. The Raptors really couldn’t have handled their one guaranteed year with Leonard any better. There has already been speculation about Leonard accepting a short-term deal to stay in Toronto, and that makes for both sides. Marc Gasol has a $25.5 million player option and Danny Green is an unrestricted free agent this summer, but Kyle Lowry, Serge Ibaka, Fred VanVleet, Pascal Siakam, Norman Powell and OG Anunoby are all under contract through 2019-20. This could be essentially the same team with Leonard at the center of it all.Leonard will turn 28 at the end of June, so he could sign a one-plus-one contract (first year guaranteed with a player option for the second year) and then re-evaluate during the 2020 offseason. If he likes what he sees, then he can re-sign with the Raptors again. If not, Toronto can clear the books and start over after a successful gamble by Ujiri.Outside of Leonard, the Raptors should strongly consider keeping Gasol and Green on short deals to match a potential Leonard timeline. They both displayed tremendous chemistry with this group. Gasol in particular promoted more passing and movement while providing an inside presence on defense after he was acquired at the trade deadline. He could be willing to decline his player option if Toronto offers multiple years. (This is the part where you have to ask why he would turn down $25.5 million. It’s a fair question.)The Raptors just completed the greatest season in franchise history. Ujiri would love a chance to run it back at least one more time.Raptors offseason: Free-agent outlookPlayerStatusKawhi LeonardPlayer option/unrestricted free agentMarc GasolPlayer option/unrestricted free agentDanny GreenUnrestricted free agentPatrick McCawUnrestricted free agentJeremy LinUnrestricted free agentJodie MeeksUnrestricted free agentRaptors offseason: The young folksVanVleet, Siakam and Anunoby will remain key parts of Nurse’s rotation. There’s no need to worry about them just yet.For now, the main young guy is Patrick McCaw, who left the Warriors for the Cavaliers following an ugly holdout and then signed with the Raptors in January after being released by the Cavs. The 23-year-old guard didn’t play much for Toronto, averaging just 2.7 points in 26 games. He was limited to mostly garbage time during the playoffs.Despite his underwhelming performance, McCaw has flashed intriguing potential. At 6-7 with a 6-10 wingspan, he’s built like the ideal modern forward, and if a team invests in his development, he could possibly fit into the 3-and-D mold. That’s all speculation about what McCaw could be, though. His talent doesn’t outweigh the concerns about his attitude at this point in his career. If the Raptors feel McCaw can turn a corner in Toronto, then it’s worth taking a cheap flier on him, but don’t be shocked if they use that roster spot for someone else. Raptors offseason: Wait till next year . . .Even if Leonard walks, that blockbuster trade last summer gave the Raptors everything they could have wanted. Ujiri can sleep soundly knowing that not only did he put Toronto in position to win a title, he also didn’t give away all of his assets in order to acquire a superstar. This won’t be more than a blip on the radar of NBA history without Leonard on board for the future, however. He is the difference-maker, the man who removed the choker label and elevated this franchise far above what many fans thought was possible. The Raptors spent the whole year preparing for this moment. It’s time to close the deal. Raptors offseason: Big issuesSo . . . that Kawhi Leonard trade worked out pretty well.In his first season with the Raptors, Leonard returned to All-Star status, averaging 26.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game. He then saw his production jump in the playoffs to 30.9 points, 9.2 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.7 steals, helping Toronto win its first NBA championship.last_img read more

Tebow, playing at TPC Scottsdale Wednesday, won the Phoenix Suns Charities Shot at Glory competition by putting his tee shot just 12 feet from the pin on the 16th hole. The shot won him $40,000 – which goes to his favorite charity.Okay, so maybe Tebow doesn’t really have a shot at being a professional golfer. But that’s definitely a shot that’s going to keep him coming back.last_img read more

Klopp wary of Nigerian strikers threat

first_imgLiverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed he is concerned by the threat posed by Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho. The reds face Leicester in the Premier League at the King Power stadium this weekend, and the host will be without star striker Jamie Vardy who is still serving suspension after picking up a red card against Fulham in the second game of the season. However, Klopp has warned his players to be wary of the threat posed by Kelechi Iheanacho who has replaced Vardy in the starting line-up.“Jamie, what a player. He causes pretty much every team problems with his style of play, going in behind, on the shoulder. It’s difficult to defend, and makes him special, different to all the other strikers in the Premier League,” Klopp said in a pre-match conference, according to Goal.Harry Maguire, Manchester UnitedLiverpool legend Nicol slams Harry Maguire’s Man United form Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Steve Nicol believes Harry Maguire has made some “horrendous mistakes” recently, and has failed to find his best form since joining Manchester United.“Now he will not play, that changes a few moments in a game for Leicester, but Iheanacho is a very good striker as well. They changed their style anyway.”“They’re a very good team, you see the work of Claude Puel paying off with Maddison, Gray, that offensive line, not a lot of teams in the Premier League have that.”“The preparation for the game was really interesting, because Leicester are playing good football. I think they are full of confidence after the last result which always helps. It will be difficult for us, but we are in a good moment as well. We go there and try everything to get the result we deserve. Maybe we can deserve a win, we have to be at our best.”last_img read more

Former United footballer says Solskjaer is the favorite for the job

first_imgAccording to Andrew Cole, who played for Manchester United from 1995 to 2001, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the best person to continue coaching the Red Devils.Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took the Manchester United managing job after Jose Mourinho was sacked from the Red Devils in the English Premier League. And for former United footballer Andrew Cole, the Norwegian is the best candidate for the job.Cole played in the Red Devils from 1995 to 2001, and he knows the English Premier League very well.“I look at Ole and I see that he is a student of the game,” Cole said to Sky Sports.“He was prepared to take in a lot of information and break it down and do what he thought was right with it.”Harry Maguire, Manchester UnitedLiverpool legend Nicol slams Harry Maguire’s Man United form Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Steve Nicol believes Harry Maguire has made some “horrendous mistakes” recently, and has failed to find his best form since joining Manchester United.“Looking at him, he is always speaking about Sir Alex [Ferguson] and what he takes from him and what he is trying to do with the players,” he added.“If this continues and Manchester United beat PSG and win midweek against Burnley then I don’t think you can look any further.”“That’s what the manager used to do with us. He was always talking to us to get the best from us. You can see Ole does that because after every game he is on the pitch with the players. A lot of the modern-day managers are doing that,” Cole commented.“Everyone wants to get the best from the players so you have to put your arm around them and show them that they are important to you.”“How do you keep your job? You have to win matches. If he continues to do that then nobody can turn around and say you shouldn’t get the job because he hasn’t done X, Y, and Z,” the former footballer continued.“I think he is the big favorite to get the job now. They will assess the situation in the summer but I am sure fans will be delighted if he gets the job.”last_img read more
